Our skin is our largest organ. It protects us, aids digestion, prevents fluid loss and also helps to regulate our body temperature. Drinking water every day does wonders for our skin, and here are six ways in which it does...
1. Flushes Out Toxins
Drinking water will help your body to flush out harmful toxins. This will ensure you remain healthy on the inside and your skin health will be improved too.
2. Reduces Wrinkles
Hydration is key to maintaining skin elasticity. The more water you drink, the less likely you are to suffer from wrinkles and fine lines. As we grow older it becomes more difficult for our bodies to retain water, so give it a helping hand and drink more water every day
3. Prevents Pimples & Acne
Hydrating your skin will allow toxins to be flushed out, preventing them from clogging your pores and leading to breakouts. Choosing water over sugar-filled drinks can also help to combat excess oil production and spot breakouts.
4. Elasticity
When we become dehydrated this can affect the elasticity of our skin. Drinking water will plump up the cells giving your skin more bounce. The delicate skin under the eyes can become dark if your body is dehydrated too.
5. Reduced Puffiness
Puffiness is caused by our bodies retaining water, which happens as a result of dehydration. The body is trying to hold on to what fluid it can and if you are not drinking enough water daily, your skin can swell.
6. Ph Balance
Drinking more water will help to maintain your pH balance, which will lead to healthier skin.
How much water should I be drinking?
Our bodies are 60% water and every day we lose water, mostly through urine and sweat. Opinions can vary on the daily intake, but generally most health experts will recommend eight 250ml glasses of water a day. That works out to 2 litres, which sounds like a lot, but when it’s spread out over the course of a whole day it becomes more manageable. Some health experts also recommend sipping on water throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
A good way to keep track of what you are drinking is by using a water bottle with volume markings so you can see when you need to top up.
Drinking water is a simple, natural skincare step that can easily be incorporated in your routine. Not only does water benefit your skin, but it will help keep you healthy on the inside too. So, grab your bottle and get drinking, glowing skin awaits you!
