How to reduce waste in your skincare routine

With so many skincare products available on the market, it can be easy to become overwhelmed with everything on offer. Before you know it, you may have accumulated a mountain of products, some of which never get used! At ishga, we’re all about reducing waste and finding natural and effective products that work for your unique skin needs. We believe a simple, but effective skincare routine is best!

Read on to find out how to simplify your skincare routine, save money and be more sustainable at the same time.

  1. Avoid plastic packaging

At ishga, the majority of our products are now in glass bottles which are easily recycled or can be washed after you finish them and re-used. OurShampoo & Body Bar comes in 100% plastic-free packaging, using entirely recyclable FSC certified cardboard. We only use FSC certified cardboard across our product packaging range, meaning it comes from sustainably managed forests. It’s also very versatile and is easy to travel with.

  1. Use refills

We now offer refill options for 15 products from our range. If you have purchased the product before, keep your existing pump and then order the refill option when you come to reorder, featuring a screw cap top to save on plastic use from another new pump. You can then recycle your old glass bottle and swap the pump over to your new bottle. Our bestselling products feature our refill pump option, including our Active Cleansing Lotion,Invigorating Body Oil, andExfoliating Face Wash.

  1. Invest in good quality ingredients

We are certified organic by the Soil Association, and our products are paraben free. Parabens are a group of chemicals that are used as preservatives in a wide range of beauty and cosmetic products. The preservative is used to prevent the growth of harmful bacteria. The most common parabens used are methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, and ethylparaben. At ishga we use Preservative Eco to prevent bacteria growing in our products. This preservative is palm free, and COSMOS accepted meaning it is safe to use in natural and organic products

Our range is also free from microplastics. Microplastics are small plastic fragments with a diameter less than 5mm. Found in many beauty and skincare formulations, these plastics are resistant to biodegrading meaning they end up accumulating in our environment and making their way into our food chain.

  1. Simplify your routine

We believe less is more. Using 3-5 products that work for your skin type is better than overloading the skin with 8 products that you are using without truly understanding their ingredients and purpose. Simplifying your routine will mean you can maximise the potential of your products and use them fully before re-purchasing.

For a simple but effective routine try ourActive Cleansing Lotion, followed byHebridean Marine Toner and then one of our Marine Creams. To find out whether theAnti-oxidant Marine Cream orBalancing Cream is better suited for skin, read more about the differenceshere. For an extra boost of hydration, apply ourNourishing Face Oil (currently 20% off) followed by our Marine Cream in the evening before bedtime. To help remove dead skin cells and brighten complexion, you can use our Exfoliating Face Mask 1-2 times per week.

  1. Ditch single use products and beauty tools

Say goodbye to face wipes and plastic cotton buds. There are so many eco-friendly alternatives now, which will help you save money and reduce waste.

Although face wipes can be tempting to reach for after a long day, they do not cleanse and lift the dirt from your skin, instead they move it around your face. This can lead to clogged pores, and many face wipes also have chemical preservatives and fragrances in them that can irritate the skin. Wipes are often flushed down the toilet which means they end up in our seas, and if going to landfill they can take over 100 years to decompose. There are also many sustainable cotton bud alternatives, using bamboo or reusable versions.
