Seaweed has become one of the most powerful natural ingredients in skincare, thanks to its exceptional concentration of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. But not all seaweed is sourced in the same way. Understanding the difference between seaweed harvesting and seaweed farming can help you appreciate why sustainably sourced seaweed is important for both healthy skin and the ocean environment.
What is seaweed harvesting?
Seaweed harvesting refers to collecting wild seaweed that naturally grows along coastal shorelines, it requires careful management to avoid damaging ecosystems and ensuring the seaweed can regenerate properly.
At ishga, our team carries out weekly trips to local shorelines in the Outer Hebrides to collect four species of seaweed that are vital to our award-winning seaweed skincare. Unlike industrial harvesting methods, we collect seaweed by hand, ensuring the plants remain healthy and able to grow back naturally. Our harvesting process is certified by the Biodynamic Association, meaning it follows strict environmental standards that protect marine ecosystems. This certification ensures our harvesting method supports natural regeneration and biodiversity.

In the UK, seaweed is still predominantly gathered by hand at low tide, a gentle and traditional method that works in harmony with nature. In contrast, some countries use boats and mechanical techniques, such as raking or trawling, to harvest wild seaweed on a larger scale. While these methods are more efficient, excessive use can disrupt delicate marine habitats, often pulling up surrounding seaweed and impacting the wider ecosystem.
What is seaweed farming?
Seaweed farming, sometimes called seaweed aquaculture, involves cultivating seaweed in controlled environments in the ocean. Farmers typically attach seaweed seedlings to ropes, nets or frames, where the plants grow before being harvested later. This method of farming allows for scalability and can help meet growing global demand for seaweed and may reduce pressure on wild ecosystems when managed responsibly.

Farmed seaweed is often harvested in large quantities, it may be stored, dried or processed before use - depending on the intended application - leading to increased energy consumption. At ishga, we also use our seaweed fresh, it's never dried or stockpiled, which significantly reduces energy consumption. We also harvest only what we need, allowing us to create fresh batches of skincare while leaving the surrounding ecosystem undisturbed.
