Why ishga uses fresh seaweed in our unique seaweed extract

At ishga, we hand-harvested weekly from the pure, clean waters of the Outer Hebrides, our seaweed is used immediately after collection, allowing us to preserve its powerful bioactive properties while creating a more sustainable skincare process from shore to skin.

The power of fresh Hebridean seaweed

Using fresh seaweed is essential to creating our unique Hebridean seaweed extract. ishga Co-Founder and marine biologist Malcolm Macrae recognised the incredible skincare potential of Hebridean seaweed, but also understood the challenge of removing its naturally strong marine scent. Drawing on his scientific background, Malcolm developed a unique, low temperature extraction process that removes the odour while preserving the seaweed's powerful antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and bioactive compounds.

Sustainable skincare

Our seaweed harvesting process reflects our commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. Here's how:

  • Each week, we hand harvest only what we need, ensuring minimal impact on the marine ecosystem and eliminating unnecessary waste.
  • By using the seaweed immediately we significantly reduce both energy and water consumption.
  • As a marine plant, seaweed is naturally self-sufficient. It requires no soil, no fresh water and no fertiliser to grow. It grows rapidly year-round, making it one of nature’s most sustainable resources.
  • We carefully rotate the coastal locations we visit - this allows the seaweed time to naturally replenish.
  • Our seaweed harvesting is certified by the Biodynamic Association. This means the harvesting method allows for natural regeneration and biodiversity.
