At ishga, we’re committed to creating natural, results-driven skincare that is also kind to your skin. To gain organic certification from the Soil Association, we cannot (and don't want to!) use the ingredient Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS). You won't find it in our Shampoo, or any other ishga products in the range, and here's why.
What is SLS?
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is a common synthetic detergent and foaming agent used in many everyday products, from shampoos and body washes to toothpaste - it’s responsible for producing the rich lather.
While SLS has been deemed 'safe to use' in small quantities, it’s far from gentle. For people with sensitive skin, or conditions such as eczema or psoriasis, SLS can cause irritation, dryness, and inflammation. It works by breaking down oils and proteins in the skin’s protective barrier - a process that can strip away natural moisture and lead to tight, uncomfortable, and even cracked skin over time.
The impact of SLS on hair and scalp
SLS doesn’t just affect the skin, it can also have negative effects on your hair and scalp. By removing the natural oils that keep your hair hydrated and protected, it can leave hair feeling dry, brittle, and weak. Some studies suggest that SLS can linger in the hair follicles after washing, potentially contributing to hair thinning or loss with prolonged use.
We believe your hair and scalp deserve the same care and respect as your skin. That’s why our Shampoo, Shampoo & Body Bar, and every other product in our range are completely free from SLS and other harsh sulphates.
Why choosing SLS-free products matters
Choosing SLS-free haircare and skincare isn’t just about avoiding irritation. By opting for natural and more gentle products, you’re helping to protect your skin’s microbiome, supporting your hair’s long-term health, and helping to reduce the environmental impact of synthetic chemicals in the ocean once washed down the drain.
Benefits of seaweed-infused haircare
For hair that feels stronger, deeply hydrated, and naturally radiant, seaweed holds the answers.
Hydrates - Seaweed is a natural moisture magnet, it's full humectants (ingredients that pull moisture from the air), which help to lock in the moisture.
Nutrient-rich - Seaweed is rich in vitamins, minerals and amino acids that all contribute to healthier, stronger hair and improved scalp health.
Strengthens - Amino acids found in seaweed help with the synthesis of keratin, which is the protein that forms the structure of the hair. Proteins and antioxidants combine to strengthen the hair, leading to less breakages and split ends.
Promotes scalp health - Seaweed contains high levels of the mineral zinc. It has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties and can also help to keep sebum (oil) levels balanced. Vitamin C helps to keep the scalp healthy by reducing dryness, fighting bacteria and encouraging growth.
When you buy a certified organic product from ishga, you can be sure it excludes certain, potentially harmful ingredients that are commonly found in other hair and skincare products. We’re proud to say that every ishga product is cruelty-free and free from SLS, parabens, pthalates and synthetic fragrances.
